*The APA National Office is in the midst of transitioning our website and its services to a new hosting facility. Due to the transition, some features of the APA website may be temporarily down for a few days.*
To Our Members: Concerning the APA Website
Dear APA Members,
It is clear that we need to make some clarification of the status of the APA website. First, we do not expect that the APA website will be down in the immediate future. Our current web hosting contract expires on October 10. The features which may be affected will be our online payment features. However, it will only be temporary. We are working with the current host to continue hosting in a manner that will allow a seamless transition to a new web-hosting firm over the next month. Clearly we are trying to avoid any change that would affect the availability of JFP online. At the same time, we are working hard to protect our members’ interests in the unlikely event that our current web host is unwilling to work with us through this transition. The JFP will be posted at the very beginning of the business day on Friday, October 9. It should thus be available to all members at that time. If there should be any interruption of service on October 10 we are exploring alternative means of keeping the JFP postings available to our members.
We certainly wish to apologize for any confusion or anxiety that may have arisen as a result of our first announcement.
David E. Schrader
Executive Director

- Philosophy Majors and Jobs: Every year around graduation time we hear the reports of average starting salary of college graduates by major. This data is often used to discourage people from majoring in disciplines like philosophy. Now, however, PayScale.com has released data showing average mid-career salaries of college graduates by major. This data makes the philosophy major look like a much more prudential choice. PayScale.com’s current data on “Best Undergrad College Degrees By Salary (www.payscale.com/2008-best-colleges/degrees.asp) lists starting median salary and mid-career (15.5 years after graduation) median salary for 50 different university majors. Of the fifty, the philosophy major ranks sixteenth in mid-career median salary. Seven of the majors ranking above philosophy are various engineering fields.
Of particular interest is the comparison with Business Management. The starting median salary for Business Management majors is $43,000, while the starting median salary for Philosophy majors is $39,900. By mid-career, however, the median salary for Business Management majors has risen to $72,100, while the median salary for Philosophy majors has jumped to $81,200.

- Basic Research Funding Diverted in the Czech Republic. The Czech Academy of Sciences faces the prospect of adverse funding changes. The government of the Czech Republic is being advised by an appointed task force, dominated by industry people, to divert funds from the sort of basic research favored by the Academy (including its philosophy and logic sections) and into applied research conducted primarily by private industries. Members of the APA can learn more about this by visiting the website. And, should they desire, APA members can also support the efforts of the Czech Academy by signing an online petition, available at that site.
The APA Committee on International Cooperation has issued a letter to the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic addressing this issue.
