Planning to attend the 2016 Eastern Division meeting, January 6–9 at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, DC? The APA Committee on the Teaching of Philosophy has two sessions planned for this meeting that promise to be informative and thought-provoking.
Rethinking the Philosophy Major in Changing Times (Wednesday, January 6, 6:30–9:30 p.m.)
This session will explore how philosophy departments are responding to recent institutional and cultural calls to prepare students more directly for the changing job landscape. How might we balance the needs of current students, given that so few continue in philosophy, with our traditional sense of the major? To what extent should we directly respond to our students’ need to find gainful employment?
Advice for Job Candidates: The Teaching Demo (Thursday, January 7, 7:30–10:30 p.m.)
This session will begin with comments and advice from expert panelists about how best to deliver an on-campus teaching demonstration. Afterwards, the floor will be opened to questions from the job candidates and graduate advisors in the audience.
Register for the Eastern Division meeting.
Advance registration rates ($105 for APA members, $145 for non-members, and $35 for student members) are available until December 23 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
