The American Philosophical Association has established a code of conduct for professional philosophers.
Created in response to a petition by members of the association, the code of conduct was developed by a task force chaired by Nancy Holland. The APA membership was given an opportunity to provide input on the code’s content as it was being drafted, and the board recently approved the code of conduct.
The code of conduct is composed of pre-existing APA statements and policies as well as new content, and includes sections on legal requirements, responsibilities of faculty to students, electronic communications, and bullying and harassment.
We encourage APA members and all professional philosophers to review the code of conduct and uphold the values and standards it sets out.
