NEWARK, Del. — Nov. 21, 2016 — The American Philosophical Association is pleased to announce that Joseph Frigault (Boston University) has been awarded the 2017 Jean Hampton Prize for his article, “Fair Play, White Privilege, and Black Reparations.”

The Jean Hampton Prize is awarded to a philosopher at a junior career stage whose paper is accepted for the Pacific Division meeting. The paper must be in some area of philosophy in which Professor Jean Hampton worked, including social and political philosophy, foundations of ethics, normative ethics, the philosophy of law, rational choice theory, feminist theory, Hobbes to Hume, Kant, realism, and pragmatism.

Frigault will be awarded $500 and will present his paper at the 2017 APA Pacific Division meeting in Seattle, WA.

Frigault is a third-year Ph.D. student in philosophy at Boston University, where he helped organize the local chapter of Minorities and Philosophy (MAP), an international, student-run group devoted to addressing issues of minority participation in academic philosophy. His areas of interest are metaethics and moral psychology, philosophy of mind and action, philosophy of social science, and political philosophy.
