AGENCE NATIONALE DE LA RECHERCHE, SENIOR CHAIRE D'EXCELLENCE: IDEALS OF PROOF PROJECT (external link)
A number of doctoral, post-doctoral and other fellowship opportunities are available under the chaire d'excellence awarded Michael Detlefsen by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche of France. Part of the funds provided by the award will support research on a project entitled Ideals of Proof (IP). More information on the project may be found at the its website: http://www.univ-nancy2.fr/poincare/idealsofproof/description.html. The project began in December 2007 and will continue until December 2011. During that time, doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships of periods ranging from one to twelve months will be available on a competitive basis. Interested doctoral and post-doctoral students and other scholars are encouraged to visit the project's website. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation supports transatlantic research cooperation between
German, American and/or Canadian scholars
in the humanities, social sciences, economics, and law.
Joint research initiatives can receive up to 55,000 EUR
over a three-year period. |

Funding Information
Funds can be used:
- to finance short-term research visits lasting up to three months.
- to organize conferences and workshops.
- for material, equipment and printing costs.
- for a limited amount of research assistance.
Up to fifteen percent of the TransCoop funds granted can be earmarked for the German partner institution and used as an administrative lump-sum.
U.S. or Canadian sources must match funds from the TransCoop Program.

Application Information
Applications should be submitted jointly by at least one German and one U.S. and/or Canadian scholar. A Ph.D. is required of both applicants.
Applications are accepted biannually, with deadlines of April 30 and October 31.

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES: Visiting Scholars Program
Each year the American Academy of Arts & Sciences welcomes fellowship applications from untenured junior faculty and postdoctoral scholars who are interested in pursuing research related to one of the Academy's four core program areas: Humanities and Culture, Social Policy and American Institutions, Science and Global Security, and Education. Established in 1780 and located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Academy is one of the oldest learned societies in the United States and an independent policy research center, conducting multidisciplinary studies of scholarly and public policy issues.
The Academy's Visiting Scholars Program offers junior scholars an opportunity to combine their independent research with active involvement in varied projects, conferences, and meetings. The benefits of the program include private office space at the Academy's headquarters and access to the Harvard University libraries. Preference is given to junior faculty. A stipend of up to $60,000 for junior faculty and up to $40,000 for postdoctoral scholars accompanies the award. 2010-11 Post-Doctoral Fellowships: "The Power and Mystery of Expertise" Seminar Leader: David Kennedy, Chesler-Mallow Senior Faculty Research Fellow, Pembroke Center. We welcome applications from all scholars who do not hold a tenured position. This is a residential fellowship. Fellows participate weekly in the Pembroke Seminar, teach one undergraduate course, and pursue individual research. Brown University is an EEO/AA employer. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships are designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences, and particularly to help Ph.D. candidates in these fields complete their dissertation work in a timely manner. THE CENTER FOR HELLENIC STUDIES Fellowship Opportunities The Center for Hellenic Studies, located in Washington, D. C., awards research fellowships to specialists in ancient philosophy and other aspects of Hellenic civilization. The Fellowship includes a stipend and free housing for the Fellows and their families, subsidized health insurance, and other benefits. The stipend (for the 05-06 year the maximum stipend was $26,000) is adjusted for individual circumstances, such as the number of dependents accompanying the Fellow and the amount of support from other sources. Additional support (up to $1000) is available for professional travel and other research expenses. The Center will also assist with Fellows' travel expenses to and from Washington. Prerequisites for the Fellowships are a Ph.D. degree (or its equivalent) and professional competence in ancient Greek studies as documented by published work. The principal requirement of the application is a detailed research proposal (no more than three pages). FRIENDS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON LIBRARY GRANTS IN AID. The Friends of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Library is pleased to offer a minimum of four grants-in-aid annually, each one month in duration, for research in the humanities in any field appropriate to the library's collections. The purpose is to foster the high-level use of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Library's rich holdings, and to make them better known and more accessible to a wider circle of scholars. Awards are $1,500 each. Additional funds of $500 are available for those traveling from outside North America. Memorial Library is distinguished in almost every area of scholarship. It boasts world-renowned collections of: o history of science from the Middle Ages through the Enlightenment o pseudo science and medical and scientific quackery o the largest American collection of avant-garde "Little Magazines" o a rapidly growing collection of American women writers to 1920 o Scandinavian and Germanic history and literature o Dutch post-Reformation theology and church history o French political pamphlets of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries o many other fields. Generally, applicants must have a Ph.D. or be able to demonstrate a record of solid intellectual accomplishment. Scholars and graduate students who have completed all requirements except the dissertation are also eligible. The grants-in-aid are designed primarily to help provide access to UW-Madison library resources for people who live beyond commuting distance. Preference will be given to scholars who reside outside a 75-mile radius of Madison. The grantee is expected to be in residence during the term of the award, which may be taken up at any time during the year. Applications are due 1 February of any year. Humane Studies Fellowship:
The Institute for Humane Studies is currently soliciting applications for the 2010-11 Humane Studies Fellowship. Last year we awarded $600,000 in scholarships to more than 150 recipients from around the world who are exploring the principles, practices, and institutions necessary to a free society through their academic work.
Fellowships are open to graduate students and advanced undergraduates. Select winners and finalists are invited to present and discuss their research at the annual Humane Studies Research Colloquium and attend other colloquia throughout the year. Fellows also join a growing network of over 10,000 IHS academics who are committed to the ideas of liberty and intellectual freedom.
