Statement on Non-Tenure Track Faculty
Share |

The following statement was approved by the board of officers at its 1994 meeting, based upon a more extensive set of guidelines prepared by the American Association of University Professors, and revised by the board of officers at its 2004 meeting. Originally published in Proceedings and Addresses of the American Philosophical Association, Vol. 68, no. 5, p. 14; revisions published in Proceedings and Addresses of the American Philosophical Association, Vol. 78, no. 5, p. 121.

Institutions should minimize reliance on non-tenure track faculty. In circumstances in which an institution has legitimate needs for a specialized class of faculty in part-time or fractional time positions, the institution should have policies that provide for their long-term stability.
