2017 Eastern Division Meeting

APA Placement Service
Share |

Important Note for 2017

Due to a sharp decline in participation by interviewing departments, the APA no longer accepts on-site interview requests. All interviews, whether at tables or in suites, must be pre-arranged. Meeting staff will continue to provide interview location information for candidates.

The APA's placement service provides a venue for interviews at the APA divisional meetings. The service arranges interview locations, provides resources and information to candidates, and protects candidates from improper interviewing and hiring practices. Please review the APA Best Practices for Interviewing, which includes guidance for both interviewers and candidates.

The APA handbook on placement practices is prepared as a guide to job candidates, departments attempting to place their students, and departments attempting to appoint new faculty members.

If you intend to interview as a job candidate at an APA divisional meeting, you must register for the meeting. Because on-site interview requests are no longer accepted at APA meetings, you do not need to register for placement in addition to registering for the meeting.

Advice for job applicants

Please review the APA Best Practices for Interviewing, which includes guidance for both interviewers and candidates.

The APA committee on career opportunities offers the following advice for job applicants: The schedule for those seeking jobs and those departments offering positions is difficult for all concerned. From the point of view of departments, any PhilJobs: Jobs for Philosophers ad publication date is a compromise between the competing demands imposed by the need to get funding for positions, so the later the better, and by the need to have time to process applications, so the sooner the better. From the point of view of job applicants, there are also competing demands: the sooner it is published, the more time to apply, but the later it is published, the more opportunities will be available. There is no easy solution to this problem, but you can ease your difficulties somewhat by being prepared. You should have your curriculum vitae ready to put in an envelope, a generic draft of a letter of application ready to be fine-tuned for particular job opportunities, and the rest of your file ready for mailing. This means talking to those who are to write letters of recommendation well in advance, preparing material about your teaching capacities, and selecting a writing sample for those departments that request it. Applications should be complete, as well as clearly organized. It is to your advantage to send in your application as soon as possible after an ad appears.

Information and instructions for interviewers

Requirements for using the placement service

  • All individual interviewers must register for the meeting online or by stopping at the APA registration desk to register on-site prior to using the placement service. Placement registration is available as part of the online meeting registration process.
  • All departments (not individuals)planning to interview at the meeting must register for the placement service. Placement registration is available as part of the online meeting registration process.

Checking in with the service

Before you begin to interview candidates, you must check in with the placement staff (Room 8228). We will need to know that you have arrived on site so that we can communicate that to candidates inquiring about your institution.

All institutions will interview by prearrangement When arranging an interview with candidates, please inform them that they must register for the meeting in order to use the service.

If you plan to conduct job interviews anywhere other than at the interviewing tables/suites provided, please let the placement service know your plans. Candidates often ask questions about the location and time of their interviews, and the staff need to have complete, up-to-date information in order to help them (and you). Departments using a suite for interviewing should provide an interview schedule form at the time they check in with the placement service. Doing so enables the service to notify the candidates you wish to interview of your interviewing location. Be assured that only those candidates listed on your interview schedule will be told the location of your hotel room, unless you have directed staff to give this information to all candidates who ask. Departments interviewing at tables DO NOT need to complete this form.

Note: If you are conducting interviews in a hotel room, please be aware of the following policy statement adopted by the APA board of officers at its November 2004 meeting: "Departments should not conduct job interviews in non-suite hotel rooms. Candidates who are subject to such interviews can appeal to the APA and are guaranteed anonymity.” (Originally published in Proceedings and Addresses of the American Philosophical Association, Vol. 78, No. 5, pp. 23, 119.)

APA interviewing tables

The placement service provides numbered tables for interviewing purposes; you will receive your table number assignment when you check in. These table number assignments will also be posted on the placement service bulletin board.

Please note: Interviewing tables and reception tables are distinct. If you wish to reserve a reception table in addition to an interviewing table, contact the meetings department..

APA statement on placement practices

The APA committee on the status and future of the profession reminds you of its statement on placement practices: The APA discourages the nomination by graduate departments of job seekers for positions in philosophy, and the submission of their dossiers in response to announcements of positions, without their knowledge or interest. This may seriously mislead those who are conducting searches, and may have unfortunate consequences both for them and for genuinely interested applicants. Graduate departments using a nomination procedure or submitting dossiers on behalf of job seekers should either attest explicitly that the candidate wishes to be considered for the positions in question, or (preferably) ensure that the job seekers themselves submit personal letters of application for these positions. Departments conducting searches are encouraged to recommend or require explicitly (in their position announcements) that each candidate, to be assessed of full consideration, should submit a personal letter of application for and interest in the announced position. A placement ombudsperson will be available at the meeting.
