Important Information for Authors

Lectures and Addresses

The APA requires that authors of lectures and addresses, including presidential addresses, Dewey lectures, Romanell lectures, and any other prize lectures that are published in the Proceedings and Addresses of the APAassign copyright to the APA in order for the material to be published by the APA. Authors exempt from this request are direct employees of the U.S. government, whereby papers are not subject to copyright protection in the United States, or non-U.S. government employees, whose governments hold the copyright to the paper. Authors may submit a copyright transfer form here.

Authors retain the following rights to re-use their material after it is accepted for publication by the APA. These rights apply without needing to seek permission from the APA.

  • Authors may make multiple copies of their material without charge, including for use in coursepacks.
  • Authors may post an electronic version of their material on their personal website and/or their employer's online repository.
  • Authors may reprint their material in collections of their own work.

APA Newsletters

The APA requires that authors/copyright owners complete a Right to Publish agreement in order for the material to be published in the APA Newsletters. Authors/copyright owners retain the copyright to their material but grant the APA permission to use the material as described in the agreement.
