This prize and fellowship are established with the APA in honor of Ernest Sosa and for the purpose of providing the Ernest Sosa Prize and the Ernest Sosa Fellowship, to honor substantial achievement in epistemology.

Regularity of the Prizes

Both the prize and the fellowship will be awarded biennially.

Ernest Sosa Prize Lecture

Nature of the Prize

Winners of the prize must be outstanding contributors to epistemology, and will present the Ernest Sosa Prize Lecture, in which the prize winner expounds some substantial contribution in a way that is accessible to a broad philosophical audience. The lecture will be presented at an APA divisional meeting, normally a meeting in the year following the selection of the prize winner. The lecture will rotate among the divisional meetings on a regular schedule set by the APA.

Eligibility and Criteria

Eligibility is restricted to APA members. The winner’s contribution should be outstanding and
philosophical, and the winner should excel at explaining complex ideas in clear language to a broad
philosophical audience.

Currently serving members of the selection committee are ineligible for the prize. If an APA committee, such as the committee on lectures, publications, and research, oversees the prize selection, currently serving members of that committee are also ineligible for the Prize.

Selection Process

Any APA member may nominate any other APA member for the Ernest Sosa Prize Lecture; self-nominations are not permitted. Nominations must include a brief statement of support from the nominator.

Members of the selection committee are appointed by a process determined by the APA, consistent with other prizes the association awards.

Type of Award

The prize winner will receive a $1,500 award upon delivery of the lecture. The Ernest Sosa Prize Lecture will be published in the Proceedings and Addresses of the American Philosophical Association.

Ernest Sosa Fellowship

Nature of the Prize

The Ernest Sosa Fellowship will recognize a significant contributor to epistemology who is, at the time of the nomination deadline, not more than ten years beyond her or his terminal degree. The Ernest Sosa Fellow must agree to devote the fellowship period to the proposed project and to acknowledge support from the APA Sosa Fellowship in any publication of the finished project.

Eligibility and Criteria

Eligibility is restricted to APA members. The Ernest Sosa Fellowship will recognize significant
contributions to epistemology—normally published work in the field. The proposed project should be
aimed at publication in a form and venue accessible to professional philosophers.

The fellowship may not be held while the recipient is teaching full-time. As such, the fellowship period will normally occur during the summer or during a sabbatical.

Currently serving members of the selection committee are ineligible for the fellowship. If an APA committee, such as the committee on lectures, publications, and research, oversees the prize selection, currently serving members of that committee are also ineligible for the fellowship.

Selection Process

Any APA member may nominate any other APA member for the Ernest Sosa Fellowship; self-nominations are not permitted. Nominators must submit a brief statement of support for the nomination. Upon nomination, the nominee will be required to submit a CV, a project description, proposed fellowship period of not more than nine months, and the names and contact information of two people prepared to write in support of the project. Recommendation letters in support of nominations will be requested at the discretion of the selection committee.

Members of the selection committee are appointed by a process determined by the APA, consistent with other prizes and fellowships the association awards.

Type of Award

The Ernest Sosa Fellow will receive an award of not less than $2,500.
