2014 Central Division Meeting: Letter from the Secretary-Treasurer

To all members of the association:

You are cordially invited to attend the one hundred eleventh annual meeting of the Central Division at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel, Chicago, February 26–March 1, 2014. This year's program committee has organized an extensive array of twenty-one invited symposia, ninety-four colloquium papers organized into thirty-two sessions, eight submitted symposia, ten author-meets-critics sessions, and four invited paper sessions. Our program also includes thirteen sessions organized by committees of the APA and over sixty-five affiliated group sessions. This year's meeting will also be the first joint meeting with the American Society for Political and Legal Philosophy, which will be holding a total of three sessions divided among the main and group sections of the program. To accommodate a somewhat increased program size, this year's main program sessions will begin on Wednesday evening and continue through Saturday afternoon.

1. Hotel information

The Palmer House Hilton Hotel in Chicago will be a familiar location to many APA members. The room rate for regular members and nonmembers is $189 per night for single or double occupancy. A discounted rate of $159 per night (single/double) is available for graduate student members of the APA. These room rates include complimentary in-room Internet access. Rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis and subject to availability. Reservations must be made by January 21 to be assured of the APA rate. Please note that student room reservations will be verified to confirm student status. If the person making the reservation is not a student member, the regular conference attendee rate will be charged. Please be sure to let the hotel know when making reservations if you require an accessible sleeping room.

Reservations may be made using the Palmer House’s online reservation form. Be sure to choose the correct type of reservation: "attendee” for regular members and non-members, "student” for APA student associate members. If you are unable to make reservations online, please call the hotel at 312-726-7500 and explain that you will be attending the American Philosophical Association meeting. Travel to Chicago

The Palmer House provides detailed travel information on its website. Chicago is served by two major airports: O'Hare and Midway. Amtrak trains arrive at Union Station a few blocks away. While driving is of course possible, members should be advised that parking in central Chicago can be extremely expensive. The Palmer House can also advise attendees requiring accessible transportation.

2. Meeting registration

The APA Central Division has adopted the following meeting registration rates effective for the 2013-2014 academic year:

  • APA members: $80 for advance registration, $100 for in-person registration
  • Student members: $28 for advance registration, $35 for in-person registration
  • Non-members: $120 for advance registration, $150 for in-person registration

The Central Division rebates $15 of the member and non-member fees to the APA national office to support the general operations of the APA. All remaining registration income is used to support the expenses of the meeting and the operations of the Central Division. You may pre-register for the meeting through the APA’s website via credit card or e-check. The deadline for pre-registration is February 25, 2014. Cash, check, and credit card payments are accepted on site.

Persons who are not now members may take advantage of the lower registration fee for members by joining the APA. Membership applications will be available during the meeting at the APA registration desk, or join online any time.

Meeting registration includes admission to the reception on Thursday evening; non-registrants, such as spouses, partners, or family members, who wish to attend this reception may purchase tickets at the door of the reception for $10. To purchase a guest ticket in advance of the meeting, send an email to For those who register, name badges will serve as proof of registration.

Please note that all persons attending the convention are expected to register (this includes invited participants and participants in group meetings). Registration fees are vital to the conduct of APA conventions, since convention revenues are the principal source of revenue with which the divisions support the costs of holding meetings.

3. Information on session locations

Following the procedure begun in all three divisions in 2008-2009, the online meeting program does not include the rooms in which individual meeting sessions are to be held. Instead, this information will be made available at the meeting itself to those who register either on site or in advance. The locations of the registration desk, book exhibits, placement service, placement interviewing area, presidential address, and receptions are, however, included in the program.

4. Placement service

The placement center will open for business at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26, and continue in operation through noon on Saturday, March 1. See the program for specific times, and check the meeting registration desk on the sixth floor for information about the locations of placement center operations. Job seekers are urged to pre-register for placement.

The APA placement service functions mainly as a channel of communication between interviewers and job applicants. It can be particularly valuable when other arrangements fail to function properly. For this reason, interviewers and candidates, even those who plan to use the placement center for no other purpose, should inform the placement center about how they may be contacted during the meeting. The placement process will operate most smoothly when appointing officers and applicants make preparations for their part in advance of the annual meeting and when interviews are arranged prior to the meeting on the basis of listings in PhilJobs: Jobs for Philosophers. Policy on Interviews in Sleeping Rooms. At its 1994 meeting the APA board of officers adopted the policy of prohibiting job interviews in sleeping rooms at divisional meetings. We ask your cooperation in implementing this policy. Interviews in the living rooms of suites are, of course, permissible under this policy, and interviewing departments may also make use of the placement center interview area.

A placement ombudsperson, either the chair or a member of the APA committee on academic career opportunities and placement, will be available in the placement service area for anyone encountering problems with the interviewing process.

5. Book exhibits

The publishers’ book exhibits will be located on the sixth floor in the Adams Ballroom. Exhibits will be open at the following times:

  • Thursday, February 27: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Friday, February 28: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, March 1: 9:00 a.m. to noon

6. Receptions and reception tables

The reception on Thursday, February 27, will begin at 8:30 p.m. in the Red Lacquer Room. Complimentary beer and soft drinks are provided at this reception, which is open only to those who have either registered for the convention or purchased special tickets for the reception (available to spouses, partners, and family members of registrants for $10 at the door of the reception). The presidential reception on Friday, February 28, will begin at 9:00 p.m. in the Red Lacquer Room. Tickets are not required for admission to the Friday reception, and refreshments are available on a cash-bar basis.

The large round tables at the receptions will be numbered. A chart will be posted and distributed at the reception giving the table locations along with an index showing, for each table, what school or department has reserved it.

Departments, societies, groups, and committees are invited to reserve tables for a fee of $50 per table for both nights.The deadline for making table reservations is January 28, 2014.

7. Business meeting

The annual business meeting of the Central Division will be held Friday, February 28, at 12:15 p.m. in Wabash Parlor on the third floor. Regular items of business include reports from divisional and national officers and committees and the nomination of officers for 2014-2015. The 2013 nominating committee will present a slate of nominees for the positions of vice president, member-at-large of the executive committee, and the four members of the 2014 nominating committee. The report of the nominating committee will be posted in the registration area 24 hours prior to the business meeting and will also be available online. Nominations from the floor are also accepted if proposed by a group of ten members. In accordance with divisional rules, voting for candidates will be by mail or secure electronic ballot.

According to the association’s bylaws, regular membership is given by an act of the executive director on behalf of the board of officers. Each year the list of regular members produced in the fall by the national office is used as the list of eligible voters for the three subsequent divisional meetings. Certification of persons as voting affiliates of the Central Division will take place at the entrance to the business meeting itself, for those wishing to attend and to vote.

8. Presidential address

President Steven Nadler will present the 2014 presidential address, "History of Modern Philosophy: What Is It Good For?” at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. He will be introduced by Vice President Elizabeth Secor Anderson. A short reception will follow the presidential address in the foyer space outside the Red Lacquer Room.

9. John Dewey lecture

The John Dewey Lectures, generously sponsored by the John Dewey Foundation, have been presented annually at each American Philosophical Association since 2006. Each John Dewey Lecture is given by a prominent and senior American philosopher who is invited to reflect, broadly and in an autobiographical spirit, on philosophy in America. The Central Division is pleased to announce that the 2014 John Dewey Lecture will be given by Elizabeth Secor Anderson on Thursday, February 27, at 5:30 p.m. (session III-AA). Her lecture will be entitled "Journeys of a Feminist Pragmatist.” A reception hosted by the John Dewey Foundation will follow in the same room.

10. Patrick J. Romanell lecture

The Central Division is host to the 2014 Patrick J. Romanell Lecture. John Perry will deliver the lecture, entitled "The Self as Subject and Object,” on Friday morning (session IV-E).

11. Graduate student travel stipend recipients

The Central Division executive committee awards stipends of $300 each to help defray the travel expenses of graduate students whose papers are accepted for the program. Since 2006, the executive committee has provided a stipend for every graduate student whose paper is accepted. 13. Call for papers, 2015

The program committee for 2015 invites APA members to submit papers for presentation at the one hundred and twelfth annual meeting, to be held in St. Louis, Missouri, at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark, February 18–21, 2015. The deadline for submissions for the 2015 meeting is June 1, 2014. For further details on how and where to submit papers for consideration, see the paper submission guidelines on the APA website.

14. Participation

APA members who wish to be considered as commentators or session chairs for the 2015 meeting should look for information on the APA website in the coming weeks. The following resolution of the Central Division, adopted at the 1980 business meeting, will be of interest to prospective participants:

"The APA is the sole professional organization that serves and represents all American philosophers. To give better effect to the foregoing statement, the executive committee of the Central Division publicly affirms its desire that the composition of its officers, committees, and programs reflect the diversity of its membership in such respects as methodology, problem area, and type of employment or institutional affiliation.”

15. Nominations

The Central Division executive committee also invites suggestions from Central Division affiliates about appropriate candidates for Central Division offices. Suggestions may be sent to the secretary-treasurer, Robin Smith, or to the chair of the nominating committee.

The nominating committee for the elections to take place in spring 2014 has already completed its work. The next nominating committee will be elected in spring 2014 and chaired by the past president of the division, which will at that time be Steven Nadler. Nominations are required each year for vice president, for one at-large member of the executive committee, and for the nominating committee. Nominees must be both APA members and affiliates of the Central Division.

16. Program information

The meeting program, including the main sessions organized by the APA and group sessions organized by affiliated groups, is now published online only in advance of the meeting. Abstracts of invited and contributed papers are also available online. A hard copy version of the program will be distributed at the meeting registration desk. The web version may be updated periodically, as necessary, to incorporate late changes in the program.
