APA Grad Guide FAQ

The survey for the APA Guide to Graduate Programs in Philosophy is an effort to collect data and present it in a meaningful format. As such, the questions require participants to make classifications and distinctions that may be different than administrators are accustomed to making. This FAQ is provided to answer some of the resulting questions in advance.


Q1.Our school does not track demographic information for students and/or faculty. Should I answer such questions with unofficial information?

A1. In the case of demographic information, we ask that you use only officially collected information. Some demographic questions are of a personal nature, and we are only interested in information that has been officially reported by individuals. Please use the option for unknown in any case that you do not have data.

Q2. What are the distinctions between terminal master's degrees and non-terminal master's degrees?

A2. The terminology is not standardized across all schools. This is what we mean by a terminal master's degree: A master's degree program to which students can specifically apply and are accepted as master's students.

If your program grants master's degrees only in the course of obtaining a Ph.D., or only in lieu of an incomplete doctorate, then your program is a non-terminal master's degree program for the purpose of this survey. If the questions you receive about your master's degree program do not seem applicable, then chances are the selection you made does not correspond to the type of master's degree you selected. 

Q3.Do we need to provide the cost of tuition? All (or many) of our students receive considerable financial aid.

A3. Yes, please. This information is important to prospective students and to the APA.

Q4. We have different credit hours requirements for different variations on the degrees we offer. The question only allows one answer, so how can we make this distinction?

A4. Please enter data for what you would consider to be the most typical option. Additional options can be provided at the end of the survey, where there is a space for additional information.

Q5. Can I have a copy of our survey answers?

A5. Yes. Please email with your request.

Q6. Our financial aid offerings do not fit very well into the categories you've provided. How can we provide information about our financial aid options?

A6. At the end of the survey, there will be a question that allows you to provide additional information. Please provide the information there.

Q7. Our graduate programs require a certain number of credit hours rather than a particular number of courses. What should we do?

A7. Please approximate the number of courses that would correspond to the number of credits required.

Q8. We provided much of the information requested last year (2013). Do we have to re-enter all of the information?

A8. No, you do not. The format of the survey and the questions asked have not changed drastically, so last year's responses will be applicable for the most part, aside from questions specifically about the 2013-2014 academic year. Please do look through the survey. New or altered questions are marked with a section symbol (ยง ). You should provide new answers for these questions in addition to any questions for which the answer has changed since the 2013 edition of the grad guide.

Q9. If a graduate received their degree prior to this academic year, should we include their new position in our placement data?

A9. Yes. We've added a field for degree year to the placement questions. 2009 is the earliest degree year for which you should enter placement information, however.

Q10. If I stop the survey and come back to it, will I lose my responses?

A10. You should be able to resume the survey, even from a different computer. If you have trouble, please contact Mike Morris at I can't guarantee that this will be the case, but it is rare that you should lose your responses.

Q11. Why are the race/ethnicity options so limited?

A11. The American Philosophical Association is primarily interested in tracking these demographics within the United States. Because of this, we realize that the categories provided may not specifically apply to schools outside of the US. Please use the "other" category when the appropriate race/ethnicity is not included in the list.
