Committee: Defense of the Professional Rights of Philosophers

Committee Charge

The committee acts for the association in advising and assisting members who complain of violations of their or others' professional rights, attempting when possible to resolve the issues that give rise to such complaints. The committee bases its judgment and its actions on general principles of the professional rights of scholars and teachers, which have been articulated in the 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure of the American Association of University Professors, pertinent resolutions and statements of the association, and precedents set by the committee in previous cases. Inquiries will be conducted when feasible and appropriate, and the committee may recommend to the board that an institution be placed under censure by the association for serious and continuing violations of professional rights.

The divisional representatives on the board of officers serve in an ex officio capacity on this committee.

Submitting a Complaint

Members who wish to report violations of professional rights should contact the chair of the committee, Scott A. Anderson, at scott.anderson@ubc.ca.

See the APA's Policies on Complaints and Sanctions for more information.

Censured Institutions & Letters of Concern

On the recommendation of this committee, the board of officers may censure institutions or submit letters of concern regarding professional rights violations. See institutions currently under censure and recently issued letters of concern.

Censure can be lifted, also on the recommendation of this committee, if the censured institution shows it has made changes to its policies to prevent the violations for which it was censured from recurring.
