Committee: Pre-College Instruction in Philosophy

Committee Charge

The committee oversees activities of the association related to the teaching of philosophy at the pre-college level and initiates efforts to encourage and improve teaching at this level. It prepares periodic reports to the members of the association and facilitates cooperation between philosophers, teachers, and educational administrators in planning and evaluating instructional programs and requirements for the training and certification of teachers in areas relating to philosophy. The committee also collects and disseminates information on existing programs and instructional materials.

The chair of this committee serves in an ex officio capacity on the committee on the teaching of philosophy.

In 2009 the committee launched the organization PLATO (Philosophy Learning and Teaching Organization - http://plato-philosophy.org - which became an independent non-profit organization in 2012. PLATO advocates and supports introducing philosophy to K-12 students through programs, resource-sharing, and the development of a national network for those working in pre-college philosophy.

Teachers can become both PLATO members and APA Teacher-Associate members for $75 per year - more information here
