Today I am pleased to announce that at its meeting last November, the APA board of officers elected Dr. Cheshire Calhoun the association’s next board chair. Calhoun, who will succeed Dr. Michael Bratman of Stanford University, will begin her three-year term on July 1, 2014.

Cheshire Calhoun is professor of philosophy at Arizona State University and research professor at University of Arizona, Center for the Philosophy of Freedom. She has additionally taught at Colby College, the University of Louisville, and the College of Charleston. Calhoun has served on and chaired the committee for inclusiveness in the profession and the Eastern Division program committee; and she has served on the Eastern Division executive committee, the committee for LGBT philosophers, and the 2005 executive director search committee. Most recently she has been serving as the APA ombudsperson for nondiscrimination. She is series editor for Oxford University Press’s Studies in Feminist Philosophy, associate editor for Ethics, editorial board member for Oxford Studies in Political Philosophy and Hypatia, and project editor for Social Philosophy and Policy.

Reflecting on her appointment, Calhoun said,

I am truly honored, and a bit astonished, by my election as the new chair of the APA board of officers. Michael Bratman has been an exceptionally effective and dedicated board chair. We all owe both Michael and Amy Ferrer a debt of gratitude for the significant steps they have taken in professionalizing the APA and advancing its mission. Over the years, I have been gratified to watch the steady, if sometimes slow, progress of the APA in addressing diversity issues within the profession. In virtue of the hard work of many individuals, philosophy is now at a particularly opportune moment to become a fully inclusive discipline, and diversity will be one of my key concerns in the upcoming years.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Cheshire Calhoun as the incoming chair of the APA board of officers.

All the best,

Amy E. Ferrer
Executive Director
