FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Philosophers Take On Fake News Epidemic

NEWARK, Del. — April 5, 2019 — On Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at 7:00 p.m, three philosophers will tackle the phenomenon of fake news during a public forum titled, “The Philosophy of Fake News.” At the event, which will take place in Asia Pacific Hall at Simon Fraser University’s Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue, three philosophers will share comments, engage in discussion, and answer audience questions on the topic. A reception will follow.

Endre Begby is Associate Professor at Simon Fraser University. His current work focuses on social epistemology, the cognitive underpinnings of language and communication, and social and political philosophy.

Jennifer Nagel is Professor at the University of Toronto. Her recent work focuses on our natural instincts about what other people know, looking at what these instincts can tell us about knowledge itself. The videos in her “Theory of Knowledge” series, produced by Wireless Philosophy, have had over one million views on YouTube.

Regina Rini is Canada Research Chair in Moral and Social Cognition at York University. Her work addresses the tension between how we perceive ourselves—as independent moral agents—and how we actually work as products of historical, psychological, and social factors. She is particularly interested in how technology affects how we relate to one another.

This event is sponsored by the American Philosophical Association and SFU Public Square.
