Announcing APA Guide to Best Practices in Establishing and Running Summer Diversity Institutes

We are pleased to announce the public release of The APA Guide to Best Practices in Establishing and Running Summer Diversity Institutes in Philosophy. This guide, developed under the guidance of the Diversity Institute Advisory Panel, will allow universities or philosophical institutes to launch their own summer diversity institute.

Summer diversity institutes in philosophy encourage undergraduate students from groups currently underrepresented in the discipline (including but not limited to women, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, individuals with disabilities, first-generation college students, and people from economically disadvantaged communities) to pursue graduate studies and undertake an academic career in philosophy. These summer programs typically range from seven to ten days and host ten to twenty students per session. They require the efforts of graduate students and faculty organizers and the backing of an institution. This guide details the roles of individuals involved in diversity institutes and how to create an educational and welcoming environment for students, as well as the more technical processes of funding an institute, designing the application process, assessing the institute, and more.
