Support philosophy. Support the APA.

Richard BettTonight, we celebrate the beginning of a new year. But before the year comes to a close tonight, please join me in taking a moment to make a tax-deductible donation to the American Philosophical Association.

The APA is so much more than just the three divisional meetings each year. Even if it was just that, there would be good reason to contribute if you can. The meetings cost a lot to put on, and registration rates are deliberately kept very low compared to other similar associations.

But the APA also plays a crucial role in fighting for philosophy departments threatened with closure. As a longtime member of the board of officers, I have co-signed many letters to university presidents explaining why cutting a philosophy department is a dumb move if they actually mean what they say in their mission statements (which usually include something about developing students’ critical reasoning, etc. Oh yeah? Then think about what will really help to achieve that and what won’t. You get the idea.). These letters don’t always work, but sometimes they do; a number of departments have actually been saved at least in part through these interventions.

In addition, the APA provides funds for projects all around the country that expose people to the subject, often for the first time, both inside and outside academic settings. The feedback the APA gets from the organizations receiving these funds leaves no doubt that it’s making a real difference. I could give other examples. My point is, the APA speaks and acts for the discipline, and I think you’ll agree there is a real need for that right now.

Donate now.

Thank you for joining me by supporting the association that serves us and our discipline. I wish you a happy and healthy year ahead!

With gratitude,
