Guidance for Non-Tenure Track FacultyThe APA is pleased to announce that a new Guidance for Non-Tenure Track Faculty document is now available online. The document was prepared by the APA Committee on Academic Career Opportunities and Placement, under the leadership of its chair, David K. Chan, with assistance from APA staff.

The Guidance for Non-Tenure Track Faculty document is written with the goal of providing support and advice to those philosophers in academic employment who are working in conditions that are quite different from those of regular tenure-track positions. As salaries and terms of employment for non-tenure track faculty are usually not commensurate with their qualifications, and there is little job security, this document seeks to empower them to improve their status and their ability to negotiate.

Work on the APA Guidance for Non-Tenure Track Faculty document began more than two years ago, and it is the intention of the authors that it be updated in the future as needed. But it is being made available at a time when non-tenure track faculty are in the most precarious position, as philosophy departments face budget shortfalls due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While it is timely, it should be noted that the document is not a direct response to recent events, but to longer-term trends in higher education.
