APA on DemandLast week the APA held an APA Live event titled Immoral Artists and Art Consumption. The replay is now available on demand.

In this event, three experts in aesthetics guided an open and accessible discussion about how we should respond to the work of immoral artists. A new film that is directed by a real jerk has just been released. Should you go see it? Should you delete music made by morally repugnant people from your library? Should we stop watching their films, listening to their music, and viewing their visual art? If so, why? Are we morally obligated to stop? Would it be good for us to stop if their work is harmful? Would a virtuous person stop? On the other hand, if we shouldn’t stop consuming their work, how should we respond? Should we at least feel conflicted about consuming it?

The panelists for the online event were as follows:

  • A.W. Eaton
  • Professor and Associate Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, University of Illinois Chicago
  • Dominic Lopes
University Killam Professor, University of British Columbia
  • Ian Stoner
    Instructor, Saint Paul College
  • Heather Battaly (facilitator)
    Professor, University of Connecticut
Editor-in-Chief, Journal of the American Philosophical Association
