As you know, earlier this year the board of officers proposed six amendments to the bylaws of the association. Of the six amendments, five passed, resulting in the following changes to the association’s governance:

  1. As ofJuly 1, 2014, three new at-large members will be added to the board of officers.
  2. The national bylaws now allow for electronic voting.
  3. The initial term of the executive director is limited to a maximum of, rather than set at, five years.
  4. The board of officers and divisional executive committees can propose amendments to the national bylaws electronically or by teleconference as well as at an in-person meeting.
  5. There will be a streamlined procedure for amending the national bylaws for amendments that do not concern divisional business.

The sixth amendment proposed, to remove the divisions’ immediate past presidents from the board of officers, did not pass.

We now begin the process of implementing the first item above: the addition of three at-large members to the board of officers.

Beginning today, we are accepting nominations for at-large APA board members. Submit nominations by email to Nominations will be accepted throughSeptember 15, 2013.

Any APA member can submit a nomination for the office of board member-at-large. Self-nominations are acceptable. However, only regular members of the association—not international, student, or teacher associate members—are eligible to serve on the board of officers. You may visit the APA website to verify your nominee’s APA membership, but the national office will confirm eligibility of all candidates.

Nominations will be referred to a nominating committee consisting of the three divisional representatives. The nominating committee will, after collecting relevant information about the candidates and confirming their willingness to serve, put forward at least three nominees for each of the three vacancies. Statements by the candidates will be posted on the APA website when voting begins.

To effect the staggering of terms, in this first year of voting, the terms of the three at-large members elected will range from one to three years; more details on this will be provided when voting opens. Subsequently, the term of office will be three years and only one at-large member vacancy will be open per year.

We anticipate that these new members of the board will better position the APA and its leadership to represent and serve the members of the association and the profession at large. We very much look forward to receiving your nominations for these important positions.
