Today I am proud to announce that the American Philosophical Association, in keeping with its mission and goals and the association’s longstanding commitment to addressing philosophy’s serious lack of demographic diversity, has dedicated up to $20,000 in the 2014-2015 academic year to fund initiatives focused on this important issue.

The APA board of officers now requests proposals aiming to increase the presence and participation of women, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBT people, people with disabilities, people of low socioeconomic status, and other underrepresented groups in philosophy. APA members are invited to submit proposals for funding to be disbursed in the first half of calendar year 2015.

Proposals totaling approximately $10,000 or $20,000 are encouraged, as the board anticipates funding either one $20,000 project or two $10,000 projects. Proposals for $20,000 projects are encouraged to include an alternate project description and budget at the $10,000 level.

Proposals for both one-time and multi-year grants (three years maximum) will be accepted. Though the APA normally prefers to provide seed funding to new projects, established programs, including those that have previously received funding from the APA, are also invited to apply.

The board of officers will review proposals and make funding decisions in November 2014, so we recommend proposed projects commence no earlier than January 1, 2015. Funding decisions will be announced no later than December 2014.

For more information, including details on how to apply, see the full RFP on the APA website.

All the best,
