The American Philosophical Association’s new membership year begins on July 1. As we prepare to begin another year, I’m writing to invite you to continue your membership.

This past year has been one of great positive change for the APA. A few of the highlights:

  • Journal of the APA: After a careful search, John Heil (Washington University in St. Louis) was appointed editor-in-chief of the APA’s forthcoming journal; he has now been joined by a broad and distinguished editorial team. The first issue of the Journal of the American Philosophical Association will be published in early 2015 by Cambridge University Press.
  • New leadership: Cheshire Calhoun (Arizona State University), who has served as the APA’s ombudsperson for nondiscrimination and inclusiveness committee chair, will succeed Michael Bratman (Stanford University) as chair of the board beginning July 1. And following the first ever association-wide vote, three new at-large members will join the board—Jennifer Lackey (Northwestern University), Sara Bernstein (Duke University), and Erin Kelly (Tufts University)—making the APA’s board of officers more than 50 percent women for only the second time ever.
  • New website: Last summer, we launched our new website, which not only makes it easier for members to renew membership, register for meetings, and access member benefits such as publications and publisher discounts, but also has enabled the APA to begin collecting demographic data to help us learn more about the composition of the profession.
  • PhilJobs: Jobs for Philosophers: This collaboration with the PhilPapers Foundation offers candidates free access to job listings and now tracks hiring in philosophy.
  • More resources: Visit our website to find many useful items, including syllabi on underrepresented areas and groups in philosophy and the expanded Guide to Graduate Programs in Philosophy.
  • Strategic plan: The plan, which will guide the APA through 2018, focuses on member services, data collection, development, and the public perception of philosophy.
  • Task force on diversity and inclusion: This task force, led by Elizabeth Anderson (University of Michigan), is looking into how the APA can best support and increase underrepresented groups’ participation in philosophy.
  • Advocacy: We continue to expand our public engagement and advocacy for philosophy, working with the National Humanities Alliance, the American Council of Learned Societies, and other organizations to support the work of philosophers and fend off threats to individual philosophy programs, the humanities, and higher education.

With these remarkable achievements under our belt, 2014-2015 is poised to be another banner year. As a member of the APA, you made the above accomplishments possible.

Join us in welcoming the new membership year by renewing your membership today.

As an APA member, you receive many benefits:

  • Discounted meeting registration and hotel rates
  • Eligibility for APA prizes and grants
  • Eligibility to submit papers for APA divisional meetings
  • A subscription to the brand new Journal of the American Philosophical Association
  • Access to members-only resources on the APA website
  • The opportunity to serve in leadership positions, such as the board and committees
  • Voting privileges (full members only)
  • Discounts on books, journals, and more from publishers and other academic service providers
  • Proceedings and Addresses of the American Philosophical Association, featuring APA presidential addresses and prize lectures

But your dues don’t just benefit you—they benefit the profession as a whole, allowing the APA to make grants to innovative projects, conduct advocacy efforts, and engage in public outreach in support of philosophy. And to ensure that membership is accessible to all, we set dues on a sliding scale.

APA membership is a win-win. Renew your membership now for the 2014-2015 year!

We look forward to yet another active and productive year, and we hope to see you at our upcoming meetings in Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Vancouver!

All the best,

Amy E. Ferrer
Executive Director

P.S. We will offer a new membership category starting this year: colleague membership. Open to philosophers working outside academia and academics in other fields, this membership will broaden the APA’s reach, enabling us to better serve those who wish to maintain a connection to the philosophical community yet who are not employed as professional philosophers. If you know someone who would be interested in this new membership category, please share this exciting news!
