Thanks to generous funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the American Philosophical Association, the Philosophy in an Inclusive Key Summer Institute (PIKSI) is expanding. PIKSI programs are designed to encourage undergraduates from underrepresented groups to consider future study of philosophy.

Two institutes are being offered in summer 2015. PIKSI-Rock will be held at the Rock Ethics Institute on the campus of the Pennsylvania State University, June 13–22. PIKSI-Boston will be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, August 2–8.

PIKSI undergraduate fellow applications due March 13

Undergraduates and recent graduates from underrepresented groups such as women, African Americans, Chicano/as and Latino/as, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, LGBTs, economically disadvantaged communities, and people with disabilities are urged to apply. Undergraduate applications may be submitted at the PIKSI website. Applications are due March 13.

We encourage you to spread the word about PIKSI to your undergraduate students, and to consider serving as their sponsor. Faculty sponsors mentor students, helping them to prepare their applications, and, when possible and appropriate, work with the students after the summer institute to help further the gains the students have made.

Graduate assistants sought for PIKSI-Rock

We also encourage those teaching in graduate programs to encourage graduate students—especially those from underrepresented groups—to apply to be graduate assistants for PIKSI-Rock. Please note that graduate assistants will arrive at Penn State two days prior to the undergraduates, on June 11.

The home institutions of the graduate assistants will be expected to fund their positions. The philosophy departments of the University of Memphis, Binghamton University, Villanova University, Michigan State University, University of Colorado at Boulder, Stony Brook University, Dalhousie, American University, DePaul University, University of Oregon, University of Alberta, and University of Michigan generously supported PIKSI-Rock graduate assistants in 2006–2014.

Graduate assistant applications should include the following:

  • A cover letter from the graduate student giving the reasons why he or she would like to be a graduate assistant for PIKSI
  • The graduate student’s CV
  • A letter of support from a faculty member
  • Documentation of institutional support, if available

Please send graduate student applications to Serene Khader at by March 2, 2015.
