The American Philosophical Association is pleased to announce that William Lane, Assistant General Counsel for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, has been awarded the 2016 Journal of Value Inquiry Prize (formerly the Rockefeller Prize), for his paper, “Consciousness and Universal Axiology.”

This annual prize, which includes a $500 monetary award, recognizes the best unpublished article-length work in philosophy by a non-academically affiliated philosopher. The winner's work may be published in the Journal of Value Inquiry by mutual agreement of the author and the editors of the journal.

Lane has been practicing law for 42 years, but for the past two decades his passion has been philosophy, with a special focus on cosmology, Leibniz, Spinoza, and consciousness. He has had articles published in the American Philosophical Quarterly (2010) and the Journal of Theology and Science (2006), and he has also been published in a number of law journals, including the Columbia Journal of Law and Social Problems.

Lane will receive his award at the 2017 Eastern Division meeting in Baltimore, MD.
