The APA is pleased to announce that three revised job market guidance documents are now available. Guidance for Philosophy Job Seekers has been updated and revised, and two new documents—Guidance for Placing Departments and Best Practices for Hiring Departments—replace the former APA Handbook on Placement Practices. All three guides were prepared by the APA committee on academic career opportunities and placement.

  • Guidance for Philosophy Job Seekers
This guide offers advice to those with a PhD in philosophy who are seeking academic positions at elite private and flagship state universities, regional comprehensives, liberal arts colleges, and two-year colleges, as well as online positions, while acknowledging that differences in hiring practices will depend upon the nature of the particular position and institution. It includes advice on preparing to go on the market, job advertisements and where to apply, dossiers, the interview process, late-breaking jobs, offers, and more.

  • Guidance for Placing Departments
This document offers guidance for philosophy departments and placement directors who seek to assist their graduate students in obtaining academic positions in philosophy. It includes advice on what to do before the hiring cycle, preparing candidates to apply, compiling a dossier, the interview process, job offers, and placement records.

  • Best Practices for Hiring Departments
This document offers guidelines that could be useful to a broad range of departments seeking to hire candidates into academic positions in philosophy at institutions of higher learning. It includes advice on advertising positions, assessing applications, interviews, and job offers.

It is our hope that the recommendations in these guides will be helpful. We particularly encourage department chairs and placement officers to share these documents with their colleagues and students.

All the best,

David Chan
