Statement on Retained Rights of Authors
Share |

The following statement was prepared by a subcommittee composed of members of the committee on the defense of professional rights of philosophers (Scott Anderson, chair; Mark Pickering, member) and the committee on lectures, publications, and research (Sven Bernecker, chair). It was approved by the board of officers in August 2018.

Publishers should guarantee the rights of authors to maintain the moral and intellectual integrity of their writings. Publishers should not include language in contracts that requires authors to allow the publisher to make substantive alterations to the author's work without obtaining the consent of the author in each case. By “substantive alterations,” we mean all changes beyond formatting changes and the correction of typographical errors.
