As the academic year comes to an end, I want to thank you for your continued support of the American Philosophical Association. APA members are the backbone of our organization, and without your support, we would not be able to do the work that we do.

Here are just a few of the things donor support has allowed the APA to do over the last year:

Award more than 20 prizes for philosophical achievements

Provide grants for more than 20 philosophy-related projects

Fund dozens of student stipends and financial assistance grants for divisional meetings

Support departments threatened with cuts

Join with partner organizations to advocate for the humanities and higher education

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to help us continue this work into the next academic year and beyond. Whether you support the general fund or direct your gift to one
of our topical funds, your generosity is an investment in the future of philosophy.

Make a gift of $125 or more in honor of the APA’s 125th anniversary and receive a commemorative metal bookmark.

Once again, thank you for being part of the APA community!

APA Endorses ACLS Statement on OMB Proposal for New Criteria and Process for Science Research Grants

The APA has joined more than 30 other scholarly societies endorsing the ACLS statement on OMB proposal for new criteria and process for federal science research grants.

The statement reads, in part,

For more than 80 years, federal research funds have been vital to accelerating advancements that have changed the world, from the Salk polio vaccine in the 1950s, to leaps in computer technology in the 1960s, the transformation of HIV from a fatal diagnosis into a manageable chronic condition in the 1990s, and the groundbreaking Human Genome Project in the early- and mid-2000s – to name just a few.

In every instance, peer review has been a cornerstone of the research, ensuring quality control through independent analysis. The new rules place peer review below political ideology in making funding decisions and gives politicians the power to cut projects regardless of their merit.

The proposed restrictions on international exchange via support for H1B visa researchers, including those from China, send a direct message to our research communities that the development of new scientific knowledge is not a priority of this administration. These students, teachers, scientists, and researchers are vital to US colleges and universities. When they stop coming to the United States, our ability to move quickly in the face of crisis will be diminished and our leadership in science, technology, and public health will be severely weakened.

The APA Meeting Assistance Fund needs your support

If you’ve ever attended an APA meeting, you understand the profound
impact that the annual meetings have on shaping the future of philosophy. APA meetings allow philosophers from a wide variety of backgrounds to collaborate, network, and share ideas. However, we recognize that not everyone has equal access to these
    events.

Thanks to generous donations from members like you, the APA has been able to establish and maintain the APA Meeting Assistance Fund, which provides travel support grants for those facing
financial hardship, especially graduate students and contingent faculty.

Dozens of graduate students and contingent faculty members have benefited from the APA Meeting Assistance Fund since it was created in 2021, and we want to continue offering this resource for years to come. However, the APA Meeting Assistance Fund is
currently at risk of running out of funding without additional support.

Please support the APA Meeting Assistance Fund.

Your contribution to the APA Meeting Assistance Fund provides tangible support for a colleague who might otherwise miss out on the opportunities APA meetings offer. Every contribution—no matter the size—truly makes a difference. And if you’re able to
donate $125 or more in recognition of the APA’s 125th anniversary, you’ll receive a commemorative metal bookmark.

Thank you for helping to ensure that all philosophers have equal access to the scholarship and community that APA meetings provide.

The American Philosophical Association is continuing its anniversary celebrations in 2026. This year marks 125 years of the APA Eastern Division, following the 125th anniversary of the founding of the APA last year.

These milestones are a direct result of the support of APA members. Without members like you who participate in APA meetings, vote in APA elections, serve in APA leadership, and donate to APA initiatives, there would be no APA.

Each and every contribution, no matter how small, helps support important APA programs:

Prizes and grants that recognize philosophical achievements

Meeting and travel assistance funds that help offset the costs of participation in APA meetings

Inclusiveness initiatives that support underrepresented groups in philosophy

Advocacy for philosophers and departments facing lack of institutional support

Member services to assist individual philosophers

Publications that promote and disseminate philosophical work

At this critical moment, these initiatives matter more than ever. Will you consider making a donation so that we can carry this crucial work forward?

Every contribution makes a real difference.
APA Board Endorses AHA Statement on Restrictions on Teaching and Learning at Texas Tech

The APA has signed onto the American Historical Association’s (AHA) statement strongly opposing the new Texas Tech University Course Content Guidelines,
which impose a “strict prohibition” on content related to “Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity” in core and undergraduate-level classes, while failing to define these terms.

The statement reads, in part,

Historians understand that the history of sexual orientation and gender identity is inseparable from the broader human past; efforts to exclude it fundamentally distort the historical record,” the statement reads. “Students deserve to learn full and accurate histories of the United States and the world, and for university students at every level these histories necessarily include histories of gender and sexuality, and of LGBTQ+ people. Simple respect for the past in all its complex humanity demands that we give attention to these experiences.

APA & 50+ Other Organizations Issue Statement Regarding Academic Freedom Violations in Texas

Today the American Philosophical Association and over 50 other academic associations issued a joint statement on academic freedom violations in Texas.

The statement reads, in part:

The American Philosophical Association and the undersigned organizations are deeply concerned about the violations of professional rights and academic freedom that are occurring across the State of Texas since the passing of the Texas Senate Bill 37. That bill diminished faculty autonomy by giving state-level boards—rather than faculty and university administrators—authority over institutional operations and governance, including the content of course syllabi. In a well-functioning university, responsibility for the content of course instruction should rest with subject matter experts in the faculty. Recent moves at Texas universities to prohibit faculty from including particular course units in their syllabi and even cancel courses and programs based on politically motivated concerns about their content, as well as institution-wide pressure on faculty to alter their courses to preempt such interventions, are serious violations of academic freedom. Additionally, a philosophy professor was recently fired from Texas State University for expressing constitutionally protected speech in a context separate from the university, raising further concerns about the professional rights of faculty in Texas.

Read the full statement.
